How Long Does It Take to Create an App?

To estimate the time to complete your mobile website and apps, consider each of these steps:

Step

Timeframe

1. Plan Content and Structure

1-2 weeks

2. Prepare or Import Content

1-4 weeks

3. Review Content

1 week

4. Design & Configure Your App

1 week, can run concurrently with content preparation

5. Proof Your Website and App

1-2 weeks

6. Launch

Mobile website can launch immediately

1 day to submit apps to app stores

2-14 days for app store approval typically, although we can’t make any guarantees.

You can see that the total timeframe depends almost entirely on how long it takes to get your content ready. Here are some questions to ask in order to estimate your content preparation time:

Content Preparation Questions

Is your content already in some sort of database?

No

You’ll have to cut and paste or type in this content. Plan on 2-3 weeks for content entry.

Yes

You may be able to import content directly from your database. Plan on 1 week to set up and verify the import.

How long will it take to enter content items if you have to do it by hand?

Plan on 4-5 hours per 25 content items, including uploading images.

Do you have GPS coordinates for your points of interest that don’t have regular street addresses? Examples include things like trail heads, overlooks and such.

No

Plan time to go out and gather the GPS coordinates, or use a satellite image in Google maps to pinpoint the locations.

Yes

Great! No additional time.

Do you have all of the photos, audio and video you need for the app?

No

Plan time to source and prepare media.

Yes

Video may need to be re-compressed for inclusion in the app. Otherwise, as long as you don’t need to edit photos, it should not add additional time.

If you choose the full-service option, we can usually have an app ready for your review within 3 weeks of the time you deliver content to us.
